QDiamond 2013: Workshop on Quantum Information using NV centers in Diamond Successfully Held

The Workshop on Quantum Information using NV centers in Diamond held by University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) was successfully held in Hefei, Anhui from Oct. 13 to Oct. 17. The workshop is organized by Spin Magnetic Resonance Lab, with support from School of Physical Sciences, USTC and Hefei National Laboratory of Physical Sciences at the Microscale (HFNL). Director of Spin Magnetic Resonance Lab, Deputy Dean of School of Physical Science, Prof. Jiangfeng Du addressed the opening ceremony. He welcomed all participants from home and abroad, talked about the fast development of quantum information using NV centers in Diamond and also pinpointed the promising future of such technology in a wide variety of fields.

Among seventy more participants, twenty-one experts and scholars famous in research on quantum information and quantum sensing, were invited to deliver speeches. The attendees came from prestigious universities and research institutes worldwide, including University of Stuttgart, University of Ulm, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, University of California Berkeley, ETH Zurich, Macquarie University, University of Melbourne, University of California Santa Barbara, The Institute of Physics CAS and Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics CAS. Director of Department of Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Prof. Shouzhu Zhang also attended the workshop.

During QDiamond 13, invited speakers shared their recent research achievements in quantum information processing, quantum optics, quantum sensing on nano-scale, etc., both theoretical and experimental. The attendees carried out heated discussion concerning these research findings and visited Spin Magnetic Resonance Lab led by Prof. Jiangfeng Du. The Lab exhibited its advanced home-built instruments, booming technology as well as the research abilities of its crew, which greatly impressed and inspired participants. Many experts and scholars expressed their willingness to cooperate with USTC in the future concerning relevant research.

Following the successful holding of QDiamond 12 in South Africa, this year’s workshop focuses on quantum control and quantum sensing. QDiamond 13 serves as a good platform for scientists from China and other countries to get a better mutual understanding, facilitate academic exchange and communication, and promote further cooperation in quantum information. QDiamond 14 will be held in 2014 in Australia.
